I'm Karen Houghton and I'm super excited to be teaching in Room 11 (the old library) in 2019 and leading our new middle school whanau - the Tui Whanau.

My family and I moved to Pokeno early in 2015 and we love the community and way of life here in Pokeno. I am married to Bevan and we have 2 young children; Ava who is 6 and Nate who is 4. Pokeno School is a fantastic school with amazing children and I am super proud to be a part of this wonderful community.

I'm an experienced teacher, having been a Senior Teacher for a number of years in previous schools in South Auckland. This is my third year being a Whanau Leader at Pokeno School and this year I am going to be lucky enough to teach some students again who I taught 2 years ago. My passion for teaching comes from my love for children and their learning. I believe building positive relationships and developing a fun and safe learning environment are key to helping children achieve in their learning. I love to have a joke with my students and believe laughter is an important part of the classroom.

In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family and our little dog Dexter. When I have time, I also enjoy playing the piano, reading and doing crafting/making things.

I look forward to getting to know you all a little better this year.
